Calming Your Mind

It seemed fit to write about relaxation in a time of mass panic throughout the world. I’m not really interested in talking about the current concerns so much as I am interested in offering my methods of soothing your anxieties. These are my top three:

1. Breathe

This may seem obvious but it’s amazing how helpful taking a few deep breaths really is. Getting fresh oxygen to your brain can really help with straightening out your thoughts. Feeling overwhelmed? Take a minute to close your eyes, clear your mind and focus solely on your breath. Allow the clean air to fill your lungs and stomach and feel your heart rate slow down. Though it sounds simple, this has really been a life saver for me. Some of my favorite practices are belly breathing and the 4-7-8 technique.

Belly breathing is a big part of meditation and yoga. Expanding your stomach with each deep breath decreases stress levels and helps to regulate body functions. If you are having trouble isolating the breath to your stomach, it may help to put your hands on your stomach and feel it grow with oxygen.

The 4-7-8 technique is a popular way to control your breath. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold the breath for 7 seconds, and exhale slowly to the count of 8. This is a helpful tool to help slow your breathing and tame hysteria. If you are ever in a moment where you are struggling to gain control of your breath, this is perfect to try out.

Never overlook this piece of advice, deep breathing works wonders for nervousness. Trust me.

2. Surrender to a Higher Power

I understand that this isn’t necessarily something everyone believes in. I’m not only talking about “God” here, a higher power can be nature, a person you know, the universe, or whatever you want, really. I think it’s important to have an entity that you can put your trust into and rely on for things that are bigger than you. I find comfort in believing that the universe has a plan for me and because of that, whenever something seems to go “wrong”, I know that there is good intention behind it that will essentially lead to growth and betterment. This week, try to find something or someone that you can trust to keep things under control for you. I’ve also found this to help lessen my need to feel in control all the time. Not everything is in your hands, let go and allow the world to sort things out. You’ll be okay!

3. Have a Physical Outlet

Exercising is a great way to clear your head and reset. Take a break from whatever is getting you worked up and work out instead. It can be a quick jog, 20 push-ups, or some squats. Anything that gets your blood flowing so your brain can be replenished with fresh nutrients. Exercising is also beneficial for stress relief because it tends to make you feel more confident and better about yourself. I definitely feel more optimistic throughout the day when I get a workout in first thing in the morning. Take care of your body, move around for a while. It will help your brain too.
